Barbie Girl is Aqua‘s biggest hit. It was originally released in 1997 and became a big hit in many countries. It created a bit of controversy due to the racey lyrics and Mattel (the company that makes the Barbie doll) sued Aqua‘s recording company in an attempt to have the song banned (the case was thrown out of court and the parties were “advised to chill”). Mattel have since changed their mind on the song, after realising that most parents didn’t actually listen to the lyrics of the song and were happy to buy copies for their young daughters, and now use it, with modified lyrics, for some of their advertising. Aqua performed a medley of their singles at the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) which included Barbie Girl.
