Kalinka is one of the best known Russian folk style songs that was written in 1860 by Ivan Petrovich Larionov. It is a light-hearted song about the Kalinka [Snowberry Tree] and the malinka [raspberry] in a garden that the singer wants to sleep under. It is one of the best known Russian tunes, both inside Russia and around the world, and one of the most loved as well. Anastasia plays the song superbly, as the song speeds up with each repetition of the chorus, she starts with a beautiful, slow rendition for the first time through and reaches a incredible speed, still played with virtuosic precision and clarity, for the last play through. The video is of a live performance that Anastasia gave in the Great Hall of the Lenin Memorial in Ulyanovsk, Russia with the Ulyanovsk State Governor’s Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments on their 35th anniversary. While the video is a single static camera shot, encompassing the whole orchestra, that prevents you from seeing much detail of Anastasia‘s performance you are still able to get a good idea of how fast her 9 year old fingers move over her balalaika and her head and body movements show how deep she is feeling the music, especially during the short rest passages she has.
