Cry Me A River was originally recorded by Ella Fitzgerald for the 1955 movie Pete Kelly’s Blues but was not used in the film and Ella didn’t release a version until 1961, making the Julie London‘s 1955 version the first released, and it has since been recorded by many different artists. It is the singer’s cynical response to a former lover who wants to restart a relationship after having broken the singer’s heart. Veronica sings this Jazz classic equal to any of the greats from the golden age of Jazz but with a modern feel added, that stands proudly alongside even Ella‘s version. She milks the song for all of its emotion while remaining genuine, perfectly expressing the pain that she had felt and the resolve to not go through it again. This video is taken from the performance that Ver gave on the Maltese TV show Arani Issa a few days ago.
