Kukushka (Cuckoo) was originally recorded by Kino (Cinema) on their 1990 album, officially called Kino, but known as Chornyy Al’bom (the Black Album). The first verse questions a cuckoo about the singer’s future, the 2nd verse tells of warriors who have fallen and the few who are remembered, the last verse asks about free will, and the chorus talks about being ready to fight. This is the song that Yaroslava sang during the blind auditions of The Voice Kids and has now become her signature song. This is one of the most powerful, and moving, versions that Yasya has performed, it would be an incredible performance from an experienced adult performer but to be from one so young and so tiny is beyond words, and she holds your visual attention despite barely moving except to rock from one foot to the other.
The original video posted (it was taken down by YouTube) was of a performance given to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the charity Podary Zhizn’ (Gift of Life) that raises money to help with medical expenses for Russian children with terminal illnesses (you can find out more about Gift of Life by clicking here). This video is from a concert that she gave in Morom, Russia, during the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.
