Mzeo [Sun] is the song that Mariam sang at the 2016 JESC, winning the contest. It is about the sun making our days happy and bright, and that winter is over. It is a great Broadway style song, I see it as being the main aria of the show where everything has reached rock bottom and the first ray of hope is seen, then all the cast freeze with Mariam moving out to a vacant part of the stage and singing this song as the lights close in on her until she is the only thing lit on the stage, then the lights come up for the next scene starting the rise in the fortunes of the protagonist.
This is Mariam‘s winning performance at the JESC final, it is an incredibly moving performance that she carries on the strength of her voice alone. In the lead up to the final many commenters suggested that the song should be staged as a Broadway song and dance number but anything more than what is seen in this performance would only be overkill and could only distract from the brilliance of the performance, if it were noticed at all.
Here is the video that presented the song to the world. It is another great performance and is only the 2nd time ever that I found myself spontaineously clapping at the end of a recording (the other time was for Tabla master ustad Zakir Hussain).
And finally, here is the winner’s reprise performance where Mariam is so overcome with emotion that she is unable to sing for a while. She is so totally adorable during the whole clip and it is also really great to see the reaction of the other performers, it is a very emotional clip and I defy anyone who has a heart to watch it without at least a tear in their eye.
