For Christmas day we have a group of videos from some child performers from Malta singing Christmas songs on Maltese TV making a sort of mini concert.
The first 4 songs are from the the Magħna Għall-Missjoni concert on Maltese TV to celebrate 10 years of the Maltese charity U Foundation.
First off we have Kasey Azzopardi singing the song Biex Tlaqtni Stennejt Il-Milied which is a translation to Maltese of the 1984 Wham! song Last Christmas. This is a beautiful version that is sung beautifully and the use of Maltese gives the song a unique feel.
Next we have Kristy Spiteri with the song I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas, originally recorded by Gayla Peevey in 1953. This is a fun, novelty song that is here sung with understated humour that cannot fail to bring a smile to the face of anyone who listens.
Sidney & Amy are Sidney Rose and Amy Mizzi who sing the Maltese Christmas song Ħelu Bambin (Sweet Baby) that was originally performed in 2011 by Chiara & Ludwig. It focuses on the religious aspects and the birth of the sweet baby Jesus. This is a superb performance from these 2 young girls who harmonise beautifully on this half hymn-half pop song.
Next we have Nicole Hammett singing the 19th century carol O Holy Night. This is a well crafted rendition that uses the full range of Nicole‘s voice, where she handles the extreme low and high notes with the same skill as the more comfortable notes.
The final 2 songs are from the Maltese TV show The Entertainers with live accompaniment from the Spiteri Lucas Band.
Next is Malta’s first Eurovision winning singer Gaia Cauchi, who won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest (JESC) for Malta in 2013 with her song The Start. She is here singing the Italian song Caro Gesù Bambino (Dear Baby Jesus) that was originally recorded by the Piccolo Coro dell’Antoniano in 1960 for the Zecchino d’Oro festival. It is about a poor child who asks the baby Jesus to come and play with her. Gaia sings this hymn-like carol with expert skill and suitable reverence giving a compelling performance.
Finally we have Malta’s 2014 representative at JESC, Federica Falzon singing the classic Christmas carol Silent Night. Federica gives a sublime performance of the song that is so enchanting that would be just as mesmerising if it were sung a cappella.
